What is the difference between Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds?

Arrow Thin Left Icon Arrow Thin Right Icon

Diamonds have been a symbol of love and wealth since they were discovered. Each diamond mined from the earth are hundreds of millions of years old. But the effort required to find these rare and precious gems has a huge impact on the environment around the mine, and in some countries, on the people who mine them.

For many years, scientists have been able to 'grow' natural gem stones in laboratories by creating a similar environment that is found in nature. More recently, jewellery quality diamonds have been successfully created and are now readily available.

What are the differences?

1. Eco Friendly - Laboratory grown (LG) diamonds are sustainable diamonds; they are ethically grown with minimal impact on the environment

2. Beauty and Rarity - LG diamonds have the same physical, chemical and optical properties of mined diamonds

3. Value - LG diamonds offer excellent value, and are approximately 50% cheaper than mined diamonds of comparable size and quality

Special equipment is used to establish with certainty whether a stone is natural or Laboratory grown. Visually they are indistinguishable, either by looking at it with the naked eye, or even under loupe magnification.

Ultimately, the choice is yours whether you choose a natural mined diamond or a Laboratory grown diamond.
